Where we are
BUCELAS DEMARCATED REGION
The first legal mentions of the Bucelas wine region date back to the time of the Monarchy in 1908. It is located 25 km north of Lisbon, in the Trancão valley. The vineyards are planted on soils that correspond to the traditional "caeiras", predominantly derived from marl and hard limestone. It benefits from a specific microclimate; a cold climate in winter and a temperate one in summer, although there are great thermal fluctuations during this period. The grape variety that gives this famous white VQPRD (Quality Wine Produced in a Demarcated Region) its unmistakable organoleptic characteristics is Arinto, produced in an exceptional terroir.
The Vineyard
The vineyard, currently covering 12 hectares, has Arinto as the dominant variety. It also has Esgana Cão (1 hectare) and Touriga Franca (2 hectares). Planted at a density of 4,000 plants per hectare, it follows a bilateral cordon system.
This is the land where João grew up and whose vineyards, planted by his grandfather, he tried to restore in 2014 with the help of winemaker Bernardo Cabral, who also has a special affection for the region where he began his career. "I was demoralized, with the land abandoned, not knowing exactly what to do and when I brought Bernardo here his eyes lit up: 'you have a pearl here'," he told me. The 12 hectares of vines, in a deeply calcareous soil, characteristic of Bucelas, provide fertile soil for markedly mineral wines, in this case with Arinto as the main grape variety, as well as Esgana Cão (Cercial) and Touriga Franca from old vines. There's also the strength of the Atlantic terroir, which Murgas finds because it's located in the far west of the region, closer to the ocean, and with a humid nocturnal climate and no great variation in temperature. The result is conditions conducive to small productions of a unique wine.
The Terroir
Murgas benefits from a unique terroir with limestone and marl soils on a south-west facing slope, protected from the Atlantic winds by a mountain range, giving rise to wines of unique minerality and freshness.
The vineyards of Quinta das Murgas are located in Freixial on limestone slopes in the Bucelas region. It is located about 25 km north of Lisbon, in the Lusitanian basin, whose soils date back to the Jurassic period. The soil is composed of calcareous marl and crystalline limestone, where we can find fossils such as trigonia, oysters and various bivalves like buchotrigonia freixialensis and anchispirocyclina lusitânica.
Weather
With a particular microclimate, it is characterized by being damp and cold in winter, while in summer it is hot and dry during the day, contrasting with cool nights. This allows for perfect ripeness, reflecting the mineral and fresh style of the great DOC Bucelas wines.
